Descriptions of Classes:

Cardio Class:

This class involves using aerobic equipment such as treadmills, stationary bikes or ellipticals for a great aerobic workout! We do some stretching for a few minutes at the beginning and end of class and we do 40 minutes of exercise on the equipment (you can work up to this if you aren’t there yet!). 5 minutes of warm up and cool down on the equipment and 30 minutes of high intensity exercise!

In our experience, aerobic exercise can have profound effects on how people feel. Improving your general fitness often leads to improved energy, improved sleep, digestion, improved metabolism of exercise and more!

Many studies have been published which demonstrate the positive effects of exercise in people with Parkinson's. These studies utilize simple equipment such as stationary bikes and treadmills to complete the high intensity, progressive, aerobic exercise. Using this type of equipment is one of the best ways to complete endurance exercise and keep your heart rate up for extended amounts of time.

This class was designed to be very similar to research studies in terms of frequency, duration and intensity of exercise.

This type of exercise could be completed on your own, but there are many barriers for individuals with Parkinsons, such as knowing exactly what to do, how to do it, and how to stay motivated. Signing up for a class is one of the best ways to increase your chances of being consistent and successful.

PWR! Moves

The PWR! Moves are amplitude based functional exercises that were developed by Dr. Becky Farley, who also developed the LSVT BIG protocol.

In the PWR! Moves classes we do exercises that focus on essential skills that are often affected by Parkinson's such as posture, flexibility, balance, strength and functional mobility.

We do exercises in many different positions such as sitting, standing, on the floor on hands and knees, our stomach and on our back.

We have themes for each day of the week in PWR! Moves. The classes tend to move at a faster pace on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and move a little slower on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday!

All the exercises can be modified to accommodate previous injuries or mobility limitations.

After completing this class people report feeling looser and invigorated!

This class is a great intro for those who are just getting started with exercise!

High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT

As the name indicates, this is one of our high intensity class! Our goal is to get our heart rate up and challenge ourselves!

We start with a warm up, walking in place, jogging, doing the standing PWR! Moves and stretches to get our heart rate up, and our muscles loosened up.

Then we go through 2 rounds of 10 circuits. We work hard for 60 seconds and have 20 seconds between rounds to get a sip of water and catch our breath. We alternate between high intensity rounds that have the purpose of getting our heart rate up, and skilled rotations to work on things like balance, posture, flexibility, mobility and more! We finish with a cool down and stretching!

Class members report getting a great workout, this is one of our most challenging classes!

Boxing

Boxing is a form of exercise which has been shown to be very beneficial for individuals with Parkinson's! We do a version of boxing that people can do from home without having any special equipment like bags.

We do a warm up similar to the HIIT class, getting our heart rate up and muscles warmed up. Then we do circuits alternating between shadow boxing, with different combinations and other exercises for strength, balance, power, agility, etc.

This class is great because it lends us to being able to challenge ourselves cognitively with different combinations during shadow boxing.

Boxing is a great form of exercise for the emotional system too, it is very satisfying to work out some frustration and feel like you get some of you power back!
